CATACOMBS OF KOM EL SHOQAFA
The Catacombs of
Kom El Shoqafa(means underground tunnels) are located in Alexandria,Egypt and considered the most important
Greco-Roman necropolis in Egypt. The burial site dates back to the second
century AD. It consists of three levels constructed below the surface.
Unfortunately, the
undermost level is not accessible due to flooding.
They discovered
inside the
catacombs sculptures that
belong to different civilizations Since different cultures existed during that
time such as Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultures.
The historical
site was discovered by accident in 1900 when a donkey-drawn cart fell into a
pit. They found inside the pit three sarcophagi along with human and animal
residual.
Although it was
built for one family ,it’s
still unclear why the place was expanded.
