The citadel of Qaitbay is located in Alexandria at the site of the lighthouse,which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was constructed by Sultan al-qa’’it bay in 1477.

It was considered one of the most significant castles along the Mediterranean Sea. It had a critical role during the Turkish invasion against Egypt and remained through the mamluk, ottoman, and the modern period.

After the British invasion of Alexandria in 1882 and by time its role became insignificant until the 20th century when the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antique decided to restore it.
