THE BIBLIOTHECA ALEXANDRIA
The New Library of Alexandria serves as both a library and a cultural centre. There are eight million books in Arabic, English and French language in the library, and a main reading room that covers 20,000 square meters. The building houses a conference centre, multimedia area, four museums, art galleries for temporary exhibitions and 15 permanent exhibitions.
There is also a planetarium and manuscript restoration laboratory.
The entire outer construction is made from Aswan granite with curved characters from different scripts.
The library’s location is not accidental. It was chosen to be next to the ancient library which was destroyed by Julius Caesar in 48 BC. It was a great loss of both cultural and knowledge.
The idea behind building the current library is to revive what was lost.
