THE UNFINISHED OBELISK

The unfinished obelisk is situated in a quarry in Aswan. The obelisk is considered a sacred symbol of the cult of the sun in the temples of Ra. It was established during the reign of Hatshepsut, the queen of Thutmose II, deemed to be the largest and heaviest obelisk in ancient Egypt.

Initially, Its size was expected to be 42 meters in height, weighing approximately 1200 tons. Due to some fractures that started to appear during the construction the obelisk was not finished.

You could distinguish some marks from the tools used on the surface of the obelisk that give us insights regarding the techniques used to carve in ancient Egypt.
