THE VALLEY OF WHALES
Wadi El-Hitan is located
within Wadi El-Rayan Reserve in Fayoum. It is 150 km away from Cairo and has an
area of 400 sq km. The valley is located in a remote desert area in the
northwest, near the foot of Mount Hell
Egypt is one of the driest
regions in the world, having just a few inches of rain a year, but the bodies
of whales have emerged from the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert. The
fossilized remains are revealing how much of Egypt was once covered by a vast
ancient ocean around 50 million years ago.
The splendor of the Wadi El
Whale area is that it contains fossilized structures of whales and many marine
creatures.
